The Museum of Things the Cat Knocked Over

Original cat comedy · Series collection · Fiction

Curator Mabel believes every household object has an artistic destiny, usually closer to the floor. At her imaginary museum, a crooked coaster becomes a major acquisition and an empty shelf demands serious interpretation. These ten fictional gallery stories celebrate the gap between what a cat appears to intend and what a human is willing to call art. No valuables need to move: the entire exhibition lives on the page. Wander through the galleries in any order, then decide which completely ordinary object in your own home deserves a pretentious title.

  1. Please Do Not Touch the Invisible Exhibit

Mabel’s newest exhibition consisted of an empty square of carpet. A label identified it as The Thing That Was Here Earlier.

The coaster had moved barely an inch. Nevertheless, Mabel regarded its new position as a decisive break with tradition.

  3. The Audio Guide Is Just Mabel Complaining

The museum launched an audio guide to make its collection more accessible. Unfortunately, Mabel had recorded every entry herself.

  4. Fig Donates a Hair to the Permanent Collection

Fig’s first donation arrived on the human’s black sweater. It was a single pale hair, presented without an appointment.

  5. The Museum Gift Shop Sells the Packaging

Mabel’s museum gift shop opened with one empty box, two paper sleeves, and a handleless bag laid flat on the floor. The human called this recycling.

  6. An Artist Statement for a Slightly Rumpled Rug

Asked to explain the ripple in the hallway rug, Mabel released the following statement:

  7. The Empty Frame Wins Best in Show

The picture frame was waiting for a photograph. Mabel considered it finished.

  8. Curator Mabel Investigates the Missing Dust

The shelf had been cleaned. Mabel arrived to find six weeks of carefully accumulated atmosphere gone.

  9. A Guided Tour of the Space Under the Sofa

“On your left,” Fig began, “you will notice something that may once have belonged to a pen.”

  10. The Museum Closes for a Nap-Length Renovation

Mabel announced that the museum would close for major renovations. Fig asked what needed renovating.
