Please Do Not Touch the Invisible Exhibit

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Mabel’s newest exhibition consisted of an empty square of carpet. A label identified it as The Thing That Was Here Earlier.
The human remembered a sock. Mabel preferred not to limit interpretation.
Visitors were asked to remain behind an imaginary rope. Her assistant, Fig, crossed it immediately and sat in the center of the installation. Mabel added “with live performance” to the imaginary label.
The human moved Fig to retrieve the sock from under a chair. This destroyed the work’s central mystery and introduced a deeply unfashionable factual explanation.
Mabel responded by opening a second exhibition beneath the chair: Where Meaning Goes When People Tidy.
The admission price was attention. The human paid briefly, then checked her phone, prompting a statement about the collapse of public support for the arts.
By evening, Fig had fallen asleep in the gallery. Critics praised his stillness. Mabel closed the museum for a private event consisting of exactly the same nap.
