An Artist Statement for a Slightly Rumpled Rug
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Asked to explain the ripple in the hallway rug, Mabel released the following statement:
“My practice investigates the tension between surfaces and the expectation that surfaces should remain as they were left.”
The human said, “You ran across it.”
Mabel felt the conversation had become hostile.
Fig arranged an artist talk. He sat beside the ripple while Mabel demonstrated the process by walking past it without doing anything. This retrospective performance lasted eight minutes and was followed by a nap.
An audience member asked whether the rug would ever lie flat again. Fig described the question as interesting, which is what he said when he hoped someone else would answer.
The human smoothed it down with one foot. Mabel announced that the work now explored erasure.
By bedtime, the ripple had returned. The museum released a statement praising the piece’s resilience.
The human bought a rug pad. Mabel began investigating the tension between surfaces and responsible household maintenance.
