The Museum Closes for a Nap-Length Renovation

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Mabel announced that the museum would close for major renovations. Fig asked what needed renovating.

“The schedule,” suggested the human, after observing both cats asleep throughout opening hours.

A notice appeared in spirit, if not on paper: CLOSED FOR ESSENTIAL WORK. The essential work involved rearranging Mabel’s front paws until they formed a more satisfying loaf.

Fig supervised from a cushion. He approved the first configuration, rejected the second, and fell asleep before the third.

Visitors were promised an improved experience when the museum reopened. The human looked around the room and said it already seemed very peaceful.

This compliment was added to the renovation report.

Three hours later, Mabel stood, stretched, and reopened every gallery simultaneously. Nothing had moved except one ear.

Fig delivered the welcome address by heading toward the kitchen. Attendance followed.

The renovation came in under budget, provided nobody counted the heating. Mabel declared it the institution’s greatest success since acquiring the box it had since stopped caring about.
