The Audio Guide Is Just Mabel Complaining

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

The museum launched an audio guide to make its collection more accessible. Unfortunately, Mabel had recorded every entry herself.

Track one accompanied a folded blanket. It consisted of a long meow followed by a shorter, more disappointed meow.

Track two introduced a cardboard lid. It sounded remarkably similar, although Fig insisted the pause conveyed an entirely different relationship with space.

The human tried translating: perhaps Mabel wanted lunch.

The curatorial team objected to reducing complex work to a single theme. They then took an early lunch.

In the afternoon, Mabel produced a new recording beside an unopened cupboard. This one featured enough urgency to become the museum’s first experimental opera.

A visiting friend asked whether an English version was available. Fig supplied a stare lasting nineteen seconds.

The guide received mixed reviews. Listeners admired its emotional consistency but noted that it continued playing after they left the museum, followed them into the kitchen, and demanded a response.
