Curator Mabel Investigates the Missing Dust

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
The shelf had been cleaned. Mabel arrived to find six weeks of carefully accumulated atmosphere gone.
Fig confirmed the loss with a paw inspection. The surface felt smooth, anonymous, and distressingly ready for ordinary use.
Mabel requested the security footage. There was none. She requested witness statements. The human confessed immediately, showing a cloth and an attitude that suggested no appreciation of provenance.
The museum described the incident as an unauthorized restoration. The human described it as dusting.
A reconstruction was proposed, but Fig admitted that authentic dust could not be rushed. It would require patience, time, and a sustained reduction in housekeeping.
Mabel accepted the challenge. She settled nearby to supervise the gradual return of history.
By the weekend, the shelf looked much the same. The human was pleased that it had stayed clean.
Fig announced that the collection was recovering invisibly. Mabel praised this new direction and recommended that nobody touch anything for another month.
