The Trophy Is Imaginary but Basil Still Wants It
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Basil had shown little interest in the awards until Agnes won one. At that point, the absence of a physical trophy became a technical detail.
He approached her cushion and looked at it with renewed purpose. Agnes looked back. Neither moved.
Rupert explained that the prize belonged to a category, not a location. Basil found this distinction unhelpful because the location was the only part he could occupy.
The human offered a second cushion. Basil declined; that cushion had not won anything.
Eventually Agnes left to inspect a sound. Basil took her place and appeared satisfied.
Rupert issued a clarification: seating transfers did not alter the official results. Basil closed his eyes, suggesting that the official results could do whatever they liked.
Agnes returned and chose the second cushion. It was warmer, having been near the human.
The evening’s final award went to Nobody for Successfully Explaining Why Any of This Mattered. Nobody attended, leaving Rupert with a perfect attendance record among people who understood the rules.
