The Golden Whiskers Forget Their Own Closing Ceremony
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Rupert had written a magnificent closing speech in his head. It celebrated community, excellence, and the importance of recognizing whoever happened to be sitting nearby.
Unfortunately, the kitchen light came on before he could deliver it.
Agnes departed. Basil followed. Rupert paused long enough to preserve his dignity, then joined them at speed.
The human was making tea. This disappointed the delegation but gave Rupert time to reconsider the evening.
The awards had produced no trophies, no photographs, and no measurable change in status. Yet everyone had received attention, several cushions had been occupied, and the human had laughed more than once.
He decided this counted as success.
Back in the living room, Agnes claimed the best seat. Basil took the second-best seat. Rupert found a warm spot beside the human and finally relaxed.
The closing speech remained undelivered, improving it considerably.
Next year’s ceremony was announced for whenever Rupert felt similarly important. The human, unaware she had sponsored the event, promised only to keep the heating on.
