The Award for a Nap in a Difficult Location
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Basil’s winning nap took place across two cushions with a gap between them. Observers questioned the comfort. Basil questioned nothing because he was asleep.
Rupert described the work as a triumph over available alternatives. A perfectly good cat bed stood nearby, making the achievement more deliberate.
The human gently rearranged the cushions once Basil stood up. He returned, inspected the improved surface, and chose a different location.
Judges felt this demonstrated a commitment to challenge rather than convenience.
Other nominees included Agnes on a narrow windowsill and Rupert with one front paw extending beyond the edge of a chair. Rupert withdrew his own nomination to avoid a conflict of interest, then mentioned it repeatedly during the ceremony.
Basil accepted from a broad, comfortable cushion, surprising critics who expected another difficult pose.
In a post-award statement conveyed by a yawn, he explained that an artist cannot live entirely through past achievements.
The human said he looked cozy. Rupert opened nominations for Best Performance in an Obviously Sensible Place.
