The Acceptance Speech That Became Another Nap

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Agnes had prepared a long acceptance speech, at least according to Rupert’s program. It would acknowledge mentors, collaborators, and the extraordinary support of central heating.

She reached the cushion serving as a podium and settled down.

Rupert waited for the opening remarks. Agnes closed her eyes.

The audience remained attentive for several seconds. Basil then closed his eyes too, creating the impression of a unusually respectful ceremony.

The human whispered, “They’re all sleepy.” Rupert considered this an oversimplification of the moment.

Thirty minutes passed. The speech remained entirely free of clichés, awkward jokes, or complaints about being overlooked in previous years. Critics later described it as the strongest address of the evening.

When Agnes woke, she stretched and left without thanking anyone. Rupert preserved the silence as part of the official transcript.

The human turned off a lamp. The awards committee interpreted this as a standing ovation delivered through lighting design.

Next year’s organizers shortened every speech slot to one nap, hoping to maintain the same remarkable standard.
