Dear Cardboard Box, I Apologize for the Brief Relationship

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Dear Box,

For three days, you were everything. I admired your corners, your quiet interior, and the way you made an ordinary stretch of floor feel like a private address.

Then I stopped entering you.

The human does not understand. She says, “But you loved that box,” as though affection were a contract with a minimum term.

You did nothing wrong. You remained excellent at being cardboard. I simply discovered another place, and then another, and eventually remembered the cushion I had ignored during our time together.

Please accept my thanks for the afternoons we shared. When you go to recycling, I will not object, unless the process makes you briefly interesting again.

There may be another box in my future. This should not diminish what we had.

With fond, highly specific memories,
Clementine

P.S. The human has saved a photograph of me inside you. I hope she looks at it occasionally and remembers that a good gift can be temporary, free, and originally intended to hold something entirely different.

Keep the comedy going
