Waffles Becomes the Prime Suspect by Sitting on the Clue

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Juniper had nearly solved the mystery of the misplaced shopping list when Waffles sat on it.

The list had traveled from the table to the floor. A breeze through an open doorway was a plausible explanation, but the detective wanted to examine the paper before reaching a conclusion.

Waffles’s contribution complicated access.

Juniper stared at him. He stared back with the calm of someone unaware that his seat had become evidence.

The human asked for the list. Waffles remained seated, extending the obstruction to a second interested party.

At last he stood to stretch. Juniper inspected the paper while the human retrieved it, and the investigation ended without any satisfying confrontation.

Waffles was cleared of moving the list but remained responsible for delaying the inquiry.

He accepted this distinction by occupying the place where the list had been.

Juniper noted that her partner had a gift for becoming central to events after contributing almost nothing to them. It would serve him well if they ever established a management department.
