The Footprints End at a Cat Who Looks Innocent

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

A few damp paw marks led from beside the water bowl toward the rug. Juniper followed the trail with great concentration.

Waffles stood at its end, wearing the neutral expression he used for everything from innocence to forgotten plans.

The human wiped the small splash beside the bowl. Juniper felt this removed valuable context, but household staff rarely appreciated investigative priorities.

Waffles lifted one paw and examined it. The evidence was not subtle.

Juniper reconstructed a brief encounter between paw and water, followed by departure. No larger conspiracy seemed necessary, which disappointed her.

The trail dried while she considered her report. Soon only Waffles remained, looking increasingly like an ordinary cat in an ordinary room.

The detective closed the case without charges. Accidental splashes belonged to life rather than crime.

Waffles returned to his cushion. Juniper joined him a few minutes later, having learned that a mystery could be solved correctly and still make a very poor story unless someone exaggerated the importance of the footprints.
