The Scenery Has Better Reviews Than the Actors

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

The playhouse’s new set was an empty delivery carton lying on its side. Morris entered it before Tilly had finished imagining the production.

Pearl inspected the exterior and declared it suitable by sitting beside it. The human said, “They love that box,” giving the scenery its first glowing review.

Tilly attempted to direct a scene in front of it. Both actors moved inside, where the audience could see almost nothing.

This created a problem for storytelling but an excellent evening for the performers.

The human took a photograph of the carton. Morris’s face appeared briefly at the opening, then withdrew. The resulting image received more attention than any previous production.

Tilly reluctantly changed the title from A Complicated Family Matter to Two Cats in a Box.

Ticket demand remained unchanged at one human, but satisfaction increased dramatically.

In her closing speech, Tilly thanked the cast, the crew, and the packaging department. Morris stayed inside through the applause. Pearl insisted that the set be retained for future artistic reasons.
