The Interval Lasts Longer Than the Entire Play

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Act one lasted forty seconds. It involved Tilly crossing the rug while Morris watched from a chair.

The interval began when Pearl fell asleep. Nobody wanted to wake a principal performer, particularly when doing so would require admitting that the play depended on her cooperation.

The human made tea. Tilly inspected the chair. Morris left and returned with no explanation.

After an hour, the audience asked whether there would be a second act. Tilly looked at Pearl, who had rotated slightly but remained committed to the break.

A program note described the interval as an opportunity to reflect on what had happened. The human could recall one crossing of a rug and felt she had completed the assignment.

At last Pearl stood. Everyone prepared for the conclusion. She moved to another cushion and resumed the interval there.

The production was reclassified as an installation.

Reviews admired its confidence, questioned its pacing, and strongly recommended bringing something to read between the beginning and the part that might eventually follow.
