Rupert positioned himself beside the hallway runner for the red carpet interviews. Agnes approached wearing her usual fur and the expression of someone with another appointment.

“Who are you wearing?” Rupert would have asked, if either of them could conduct the interview aloud.

Agnes continued walking.

He followed with a question about the season’s most demanding role. She stopped to inspect the corner of a doorframe.

Rupert interpreted this as thoughtful consideration. The human interpreted it as two cats in the hallway.

Basil arrived next and lay down directly across the carpet, ending the procession while improving the photo opportunity.

Agnes used the delay to leave.

The interview aired in Rupert’s imagination as an intimate conversation with a famously private star. Viewers praised its lack of unnecessary words.

The human stepped over Basil and carried the laundry upstairs. Rupert nominated her for Best Original Choreography.

By the time the ceremony began, every guest had taken a different route and the red carpet was finally available to nobody who wanted it.
