The Costume Department Receives One Imaginary Hat
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Tilly proposed a period drama requiring elaborate costumes. The human looked at the cats and wisely supplied none.
Instead, the company agreed to imagine a hat on Morris. It was tall, feathered, and entirely fictional, which suited him because he could ignore it without removing anything.
Pearl requested an imaginary cape. Tilly approved, provided it did not interfere with her entrance. Pearl’s entrance was already unlikely for unrelated reasons.
The human narrated the opening: “Here comes Lord Morris.” Morris stopped to inspect the baseboard.
Tilly considered this a bold interpretation of aristocratic responsibility.
The imagined hat became increasingly extravagant as rehearsals continued. By Friday it had three feathers, a jeweled buckle, and a backstory longer than the script.
Morris remained unaware of his success in costume.
On opening night, the human forgot about the hat. Tilly pressed ahead. The performance lost nothing, proving that excellent design can disappear completely into the work.
Pearl’s cape won an imaginary award, which she accepted from a perfectly ordinary cushion.
