The Blanket Was Missing Because It Was on Juniper
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Juniper woke from a nap and could not find the blanket’s familiar corner. She usually slept with it visible beside her front paws.
Waffles began a search around the chair. Nothing lay on the floor. Nothing had slipped behind the cushion.
The human looked over and smiled. Juniper distrusted the expression; witnesses sometimes found serious work unnecessarily charming.
When the detective stood, the blanket shifted. Its folded edge slid from beneath her shoulder and appeared exactly where she had expected it all along.
Waffles paused.
Juniper paused longer.
The human said, “There it is.” This was accurate but lacked discretion.
The report described the case as a complex visibility issue involving the investigator’s proximity to the subject. It did not use the phrase “lying on it.”
Waffles accepted the official explanation, partly because he once spent an afternoon looking for a toy behind himself.
The blanket was returned to its usual position. Juniper settled down to guard it and, within minutes, recreated the original problem with impressive consistency.
