The Disappearing Reflection at the Closed Window
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Juniper spotted another cat in the dark window. The stranger looked remarkably competent.
Waffles approached from the side and discovered a second stranger who looked less concerned about the investigation.
Neither visitor made a sound. Both copied the detectives’ movements with suspicious accuracy.
The human switched on a lamp, changing the reflections. Juniper stepped back, then forward. Her counterpart did the same, evidently unwilling to reveal independent intentions.
Waffles lost interest first. His stranger left at precisely the same moment, suggesting coordination at a level he preferred not to explore.
Juniper remained until the human drew the curtain. The entire operation vanished behind fabric.
She filed the case as unresolved but contained.
The following morning, daylight returned the ordinary garden to the glass. There was no sign of the visitors.
Juniper considered several theories, including a covert night shift and unusually disciplined window staff. The human suggested “reflection.” Juniper retained that explanation as a possibility, although it lacked the dramatic value of the alternatives.
