The Case of the Upstairs Thump with No Upstairs Suspect

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

A thump came from upstairs. Juniper was downstairs. Waffles was downstairs. The human was also downstairs, holding a book.

This left the detective with an unusually clean suspect list and nowhere obvious to put suspicion.

She approached the stairs. Waffles followed three steps behind, maintaining what he considered a sensible reserve force.

At the top they found a folded towel that had slipped from a chair onto a lightweight laundry basket. The arrangement offered a plausible explanation for the sound and no explanation for why it had chosen that moment.

The human arrived, saw the towel, and put it away.

Juniper wanted to ask further questions about gravity. Unfortunately, gravity had not provided a contact address.

Waffles inspected the newly empty chair and found it suitable for sitting. The detective joined him nearby.

The case ended without a suspect, a chase, or even a particularly interesting towel. Juniper recorded the outcome as successful prevention of additional uncertainty, which sounded considerably more impressive than going upstairs and finding laundry.
