An Interrogation Conducted Entirely Through Blinking
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Juniper positioned herself across from Waffles. Between them lay the soft toy she had found in an unexpected room.
She blinked once.
Waffles blinked slowly in return.
The detective maintained her gaze. Her partner looked toward the window, then back at the toy. The exchange had entered a delicate phase in which neither participant knew what the other participant was discussing.
The human watched and whispered, “They’re getting along so nicely.” Juniper considered this a fundamental misunderstanding of investigative technique.
Waffles lay down. Juniper did the same, keeping the evidence within view.
After several minutes, both cats closed their eyes. The interrogation moved into a quieter stage.
The toy remained unexplained until the human later mentioned carrying it in from the hallway. Juniper reopened one eye, acknowledged the development, and returned to work.
Her report praised the patient interview process. Waffles praised the rug by continuing to sleep on it.
The case demonstrated that silence can reveal a great deal, provided somebody eventually walks past and tells you the answer.
