Somebody Moved the Toy Exactly Four Inches
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
The felt mouse lay beside the chair. Juniper distinctly remembered leaving it nearer the rug.
Waffles asked whether four inches justified a full investigation. Juniper reminded him that small distances were still distances, especially at their height.
They interviewed the chair, which offered no useful account. The rug appeared unchanged. The human said she had vacuumed, introducing a person of interest with an extremely broad operating area.
Juniper inspected the mouse. It was intact, familiar, and apparently unconcerned about its displacement.
Waffles nudged it. It moved another four inches.
The detective turned slowly toward her partner.
He explained through immediate distraction that demonstrations were essential to investigative work.
The case expanded. Juniper could no longer establish which movement belonged to the original incident and which to Waffles’s contribution.
The human picked up the toy and placed it on the rug. Everyone watched.
At last, a relocation with witnesses. Juniper closed the file and sat beside the mouse until Waffles arrived to provide another demonstration nobody had requested.
