Pearl’s Understudy Is a Suspiciously Similar Cushion

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Pearl failed to appear for rehearsal because she was already lying somewhere more comfortable. Tilly activated the understudy plan.

The plan was a cream cushion approximately Pearl’s size. It lacked dialogue, movement, and professional ambition, but so did Pearl during most rehearsals.

Morris performed opposite the cushion with unusual confidence. It never interrupted, never left early, and accepted his tendency to improvise a scene about looking under the sofa.

The human said the cushion was doing very well. Pearl heard this from the armchair and opened one eye.

At the following rehearsal, she arrived immediately and occupied the understudy. Tilly praised her renewed commitment. The cushion remained beneath her, continuing its quiet contribution.

Opening night featured both performers in the same role. Critics described the portrayal as layered.

Pearl accepted the applause without acknowledging her colleague. The cushion’s representative could not be reached, although the human later straightened it and said it looked squashed.

Tilly began rehearsals for a sequel with more reliable furniture.
