A Dramatic Monologue Addressed to the Pantry

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

Morris stood before the pantry and delivered the performance of his life.

The opening note was restrained. A single meow, shaped by longing. Then came a pause long enough for the human to ask, “What?”

He repeated the note with additional history behind it.

Tilly watched from the doorway, recognizing immediately that Morris had discovered his subject. Here was conflict. Here was desire. Here was a closed surface refusing to become an open one.

The human said dinner was later. Morris treated this as his cue for the second act.

His voice rose. His posture expanded. Pearl departed, finding the production too experimental.

When the pantry finally opened for an unrelated reason, Morris inspected the contents and walked away. The dramatic objective had apparently been architectural.

Tilly planned to stage the monologue publicly. Morris could not reproduce it in rehearsal. Without a genuinely closed pantry, he explained through indifference, there was no truth in the work.

The human closed it. The encore began immediately.
