Morris Improvises an Entirely Different Ending
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
The script ended with a reunion. Tilly would approach Morris, Pearl would look on, and the company would pause in a touching arrangement near the sofa.
Morris instead went behind the sofa.
Tilly waited. Pearl looked on, technically fulfilling her obligations.
The human assumed Morris had spotted a toy. Tilly assumed he was exploring a darker conclusion in which reunion remained impossible.
Both interpretations were plausible until Morris returned carrying nothing and sat with his back to everyone.
The director chose to embrace the ambiguity. She described the ending as a meditation on the limits of communication.
Morris began washing one shoulder, adding a final gesture that the human found very funny.
The production became a comedy. Tilly adjusted the program accordingly.
At the next performance, Morris followed the original ending by accident. The human said it was sweet but less funny.
Tilly learned an important lesson: improvisation cannot be scheduled, especially when the performer has never accepted that there was a schedule, a script, or a performance.
