Closing Night Is Extended Because Nobody Left

Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction

The Cardboard Playhouse announced its final performance. Tilly thanked the company for a demanding season of almost doing things together.

Morris remained in the carton. Pearl remained on the cushion. The human remained on the sofa because she was watching television.

Under the circumstances, closing proved difficult to distinguish from remaining open.

Tilly attempted a farewell walk across the room. Nobody recognized it as a farewell. She walked back, which weakened the message further.

The human called, “Are you coming up?” Tilly joined her, abandoning management for a more attractive position beside a warm arm.

The season was extended indefinitely.

In the following weeks, performances continued without titles, rehearsal, or any guarantee that the audience would notice. Morris specialized in unexpected entrances. Pearl perfected stillness. Tilly discovered that the best seat in the theater was sometimes on the person paying the heating bill.

The carton eventually went to recycling. A replacement arrived two days later.

The company announced a bold new venue and returned to precisely the same work.
