Group Project: Everyone Must Ignore Pudding Together
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Pudding assigned a difficult group project: the household would ignore him while he considered approaching a visitor.
The visitor smiled directly at him. The human said his name. Both students failed the opening exercise.
Pudding stepped behind a chair and waited for the class to improve.
Eventually the humans began talking to each other. Nobody reached toward him. Nobody narrated his movements. Conditions became acceptable.
He approached, inspected the visitor’s shoe, and settled nearby.
The human whispered, “He likes you.” This disrupted the project by drawing attention to its success.
Pudding left for the hallway, where academic standards remained higher.
After another quiet interval, he returned and sat beside the visitor. The class managed to continue its conversation without making a ceremony of it.
Pudding awarded a shared pass.
The visitor later said the cat was lovely. The human agreed. Neither realized that their most successful contribution had been temporarily reducing the amount of contribution they were making.
The professor listed the session as a breakthrough in collaborative restraint.
