Graduation Is Delayed by One More Door
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
The human had completed every requirement for graduation from Pudding’s academy. She recognized preferred cushions, understood several kinds of stare, and could locate the correct cupboard without prompting.
Pudding prepared to award her diploma by sitting beside her with a satisfied expression.
Then a door closed somewhere down the hall.
He stood. The student stood. Together they approached the new problem.
She opened the door. Pudding looked through but did not enter.
“Really?” she asked.
The professor withheld the diploma. Her technical skills were excellent, but her attitude toward threshold uncertainty needed further development.
She left the door open and returned to the sofa. Pudding joined her minutes later, having concluded his inspection from outside the room.
The graduation ceremony resumed. The human received a slow blink, which she interpreted as affection rather than accreditation.
Both interpretations were acceptable.
The academy offered continuing education, naturally. A well-trained human should never be allowed to believe that learning ends merely because the cat is, for the moment, comfortable.
