Detective Juniper Solves the Mystery of the Second Cat Bed

A second cat bed appeared beside the first. Juniper treated it as a major development in household infrastructure.

Waffles inspected the newcomer and sat in the original bed. Juniper inspected the original bed and sat beside both.

The human explained that there was now one for each of them. This sounded simple, which made the detective suspicious. Previous arrangements had always included an element of negotiation.

She tested the new bed. It was comfortable. Waffles noticed her satisfaction and looked interested.

Juniper left. Waffles entered. She returned to the first bed and discovered it was also comfortable, a fact temporarily obscured by the existence of an alternative.

For once, both cats settled at the same time.

The mystery had no hidden motive beyond a human hoping they would enjoy themselves.

Juniper found this explanation persuasive enough to stop investigating.

Her final report was never written. A detective should know when a case is closed, especially when the answer is soft, nearby, and already warming beneath her.
