A Weekend in the Exotic Land of the Upstairs Landing
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Dot had heard wonderful things about the upstairs landing, mostly from herself. She decided to spend the weekend there.
The journey took twelve stairs. She arrived without luggage and immediately regretted not bringing the downstairs blanket, which remained stubbornly downstairs.
The landing offered sweeping views of the stairs she had just climbed. Local culture included the human carrying laundry past at irregular intervals.
Claude visited briefly and asked, through his expression, what she was doing. Dot explained by staying put that travel broadens the mind.
At lunch, she returned downstairs. At dinner, she did the same. Overnight accommodation proved less comfortable than the familiar chair, so she slept there instead.
By Sunday, Dot had spent a total of twenty-three minutes at her destination. She described the trip as restorative.
Her travel diary advised future visitors to allow plenty of time for return journeys and to avoid expecting the landing to become more interesting simply because they had committed to writing about it.
