The Homework Is to Stop Straightening My Blanket
Share
Original cat comedy · Short read · Fiction
Professor Pudding assigned the human a simple task: leave the blanket exactly as he had arranged it.
The arrangement featured one folded corner, a central hollow, and a ridge that appeared accidental but carried deep personal significance.
The human straightened it before visitors arrived.
Pudding discovered the revision and stared at the flat surface. The student had confused presentation with function, a common error among people who owned decorative cushions.
He rebuilt the hollow through patient circling and a decisive flop. The human watched and said, “Oh, you like it messy.”
The professor objected to the terminology. He preferred “individually calibrated.”
The next day, she left the blanket alone. Pudding slept somewhere else.
This did not invalidate the assignment. Education was about preserving possibilities, not guaranteeing that the instructor would use them.
The human received full marks and no explanation. Her final project involved identifying which of three identical blanket arrangements Pudding preferred on a given Tuesday.
The syllabus warned that previous results were not reliable predictors of future academic requirements.
