Killing a cat, even by accident, was a crime punishable by death. Egyptian households welcomed cats, believing they brought good luck and protection from evil spirits.

Similarly, in Norse mythology, the goddess Freyja, associated with love, magic, and war, was said to ride a chariot pulled by two large cats. As a result, Norse farmers treated cats with great respect, believing they brought good fortune and a bountiful harvest.

Medieval Europe: The Rise of Fear

During the Middle Ages, cats went from being symbols of protection to being seen as creatures of darkness. In Christian Europe, their independent nature and nocturnal habits made them suspicious figures, especially black cats. Cats as Witches’ Familiars

Some myths claimed witches could shape-shift into cats to escape detection or spy on their enemies. Others told of witches sending their cat familiars to carry out curses or deliver messages from the devil.

One famous legend comes from 16th-century Scotland, where a group of people accused of witchcraft were said to have turned into cats and performed dark rituals. Similar stories emerged in England and France, reinforcing the fear that cats were deeply tied to the supernatural.

The Black Cat Superstition

The idea that black cats bring bad luck originated during the witch trials. People believed that if a black cat crossed their path, it was a sign of impending doom. Sailors, however, had the opposite belief—black cats were considered good luck aboard ships, and many vessels kept them to ward off misfortune.

In some cultures, black cats were also seen as bringers of prosperity. In Japan, for example, the Maneki-neko, or “beckoning cat,” is often depicted in black as a charm to ward off evil spirits.

Modern Witches and Cats

Today, the stigma around cats and witchcraft has largely faded, and many modern witches embrace cats as spiritual companions. In Wiccan and pagan traditions, cats are still seen as protectors of energy, often believed to sense negative forces and provide comfort to their owners.

The black cat stereotype continues in pop culture, from Salem in Sabrina the Teenage Witch to Binx in Hocus Pocus. However, rather than being feared, black cats are now often celebrated for their mystical charm.
